DAWN OF A NEW ERA By Editor Kathy McIntyre

Dawn always reminds me of a new beginning, a fresh start, a rebirth and beauty.  Your new community Newspaper, the Commerce City Gateway, welcomes you, our readers and neighbors. Our goal is to always report to you the relevant issues in your community with the most unbiased integrity and the truth. We will celebrate the rich history, heritage, and culture that our community is so blessed with. We will strive to represent good news, not sensationalize unfortunate events, and to find solutions.

We are positive and optimistic about the future of our wonderful city. We want to be the means to bring hope and enjoyment to our readers. We want to bring neighbors together and never be a tool to divide. We will educate our readers with the actual facts behind the issues and always research before we publish. We are not perfect and will have our own “Department of Corrections” when we make a mistake. We will use the paper to celebrate the achievements and milestones of our community.  We will strive to stimulate the city’s economy by showing the outside world the beauty of our community and teaching the community to support local business.

My father always called Colorado, “God’s country”. When you stand anywhere in Commerce City and look at the front range, you can see what my father saw and why he loved it so deeply. I have lived in Colorado most of my life, with ten years in North Dakota and ten years in Westchester County, New York (so yes, I am over twenty-one years old). In the fall of 1975 I lived in Commerce City at 72nd and Quebec. We had a fire and the Commerce City Fire Department saved the lives of my two sons.  That alone would have been enough but the outpouring of love and support from this community was unsurpassed.  I still see that same community of passionate, caring people today. All of us here at the paper want all of you to see it too. The city is at a critical point right now and we owe it to future generations to make the right choices. We need to listen to each other, respect each other, and to find solutions to keep making progress.  We need to help each other as we continue to move forward.  Most of our readers do not know the history of this area and will be very surprised to find out how rich it is. It is a history filled with strength, endurance, patriotism, generosity, and perseverance that have overcome all odds. Many of the native residents of Commerce City today have spent their entire lives dedicated to the improvement of our beautiful city. The new residents have that same vision of beauty. Working together, we have the power to not only become the jewel of the Rocky Mountain region, but an example of community that will be unmatched anywhere.

Baby the Cat maintains a discerning look at the Gateway News from high atop his tower.  Baby exercises his (cat)itude through the many bites and scratches he imposes on the Gateway Staff and their work efforts.  Baby is an incessant critic of all but his own work while keeping a watchful eye on his apprentice, Babette, whom he still insists is an orange mouse.

Babette the Kitty is Baby the Cat's apprentice, actually his baby sister. She observes what Baby is spending his time doing each week and follows him around most of the time. She reports to the readers her view of a kitty's life in Commerce City and corrects what Baby tells them when he stretches the truth.

About Us

Willie the Weed and Skyler the Weed.  Two very highly paid consultants/commentaries that were born out of a controversial city ordinance dealing with local plant growth.  These two weeds are always opposite during their debates thus sparking the very well read column “War of the Weeds”.

Kathy McIntyre is Editor and one of the owners of the Gateway News.  A Colorado Native, she has also lived in North Dakota and New York.  She holds a degree in accounting with a minor in computer science.  She practiced accounting for twenty-five years but was always an aspiring writer.  She first moved to what is now Commerce City in 1971, and she moved back in 2003 into the Reunion area of the city.  Her motivation for starting a new local newspaper was to improve the reputation and morale of an area known for its former chemical weapons plant but is now show casing several new master planned housing communities, a new sports stadium, new schools, and the largest urban wildlife refuge in North America. Commerce City is fast becoming a favored place to live, work, and enjoy life.

Kathy is an activist known for her work in making the federal government and the auto industry responsible for air bag safety.  She is a tireless advocate for what is good and against what is bad in her city.

Dustin McIntyre has an undergraduate degree in Psychology and advanced degrees in forensics.  Dustin has worked as a professional photographer and handles most of the art directions of the Gateway News.  Dustin was the Time magazine person of the year in 2006.
