HELP SOLDIERS WITH TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY

The Bob Woodruff Family Fund for Traumatic Brain Injury has been established to raise money to assist members of the military with cognitive rehabilitation and other care needs following traumatic brain injury. Often called the signature wound of the Iraq war, TBI can rob people of themselves, causing problems that range from trouble speaking and concentrating to violence, anger and a loss of "filter". Bob's family established the Bob Woodruff Family Fund for Traumatic Brain Injury to raise awareness about TBI, and to raise money to support organizations that help those suffering from TBI to receive the best care possible.

You can help by purchasing one of these beautiful handcrafted Mala Prayer Bracelets that will bring you good energy and good luck. What Are We Becoming?

Craig W. Henningfield

Bulimia is real … and dangerous. Bulimics suffer under a serious and potentially life-threatening psychological disorder that expresses itself in an eating/purging cycle. From a website that tells the story of bulimia, a young woman cries out:

“I am twenty years old and in college studying to become an opera singer. I have struggled with an eating disorder for seven years now. When I was in high school, my parents hospitalized me fifteen times. At that point in my life, I was anorexic. Now, I just struggle with bulimia. It is easier to hide and be in denial about. I get straight A’s in school, I have a great boyfriend, I get solos at our school concerts, yet I hate myself. I realized that this week. I hate my hair, my face, by stomach, everything. I don’t even know why. I want to get better, but I don’t even know what to do anymore. Sometimes I just lay on the bathroom floor weak and exhausted from purging. My mom is over-bearing and critical and my dad was pretty non-existent until two years ago. I love him, though, because he has proved to be a great help in my life. I feel bad all the time, like I am hurting people or saying the wrong thing. I have panic attacks and forget and lose things all the time. My room is a mess. My life is a mess. My brain is a mess. I have no money because I spent it all on food to binge on and then purge. I am really overwhelmed. Maybe I should seek help, I don’t know. I feel as though I have tried that road so often before, but it is not a game anymore. I feel it affecting my health, my friends, my perception of myself. I want to be someone else, somewhere else. It is all so frustrating. I just want it all to end.”

If you know this young woman, be her friend, help her, love her, support her, be wholly there for her, in person and in heart – listen. Here is a young woman longing to be loved … and she is not alone!

Not long ago, the United States celebrated Thanksgiving Day. From the earliest times of our nation, we have sought to give thanks for the blessings of Almighty God on our nation, culture, religious expression and future opportunities. President George Washington, in a 1789 Proclamation, reminded: Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor … to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that Great And Glorious Being, who is the Beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be.”

And, when we give thanks, in keeping with tradition, we eat! Wow, do we eat! The local FOX affiliate, during their morning show, recently reported the “caloric” totals for an average Thanksgiving feast. As you can imagine, the numbers were staggering. But, it was what they did with those numbers that amazed me. The local reporter, after commenting on the calories of each “recommended” portion of the meal, went on to share how to exercise the glut away. For instance, to overcome just the appetizers means five hours of Pilates! Then, she went through the rest of the menu … adding up the hard exercise that would be needed to “purge” the feast. And, who eats the “recommended” portion!

Believe me, I do not mean to make light of a very serious eating disorder. There are people in every community who struggle with this devastating dis-order of the soul. Did you know that compulsive, excessive exercise is one way a bulimic purges? If you need help with this dis-ease, get it! So, when a local media network focuses on “purging” instead of “thanksgiving,” how “to get rid of” rather than how “to appreciate,” this makes me wonder. What are we becoming?

As I view our cultural moment, are there not more and more women and men who could write the above story? As odd as it may sound, are we becoming a culture of self-haters such that we are unable to love one another … or be loved by another? Are we becoming so concerned with our physical-appearance that we are unable to give thanks for the body we’ve been given? I’m all for taking care of the precious “body” gift I’ve been given. But, there is Another who informs my sense of life and purpose and meaning. I’m with George on this one!

Create a great day!
